What's new on Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter 2.0

Microsoft released "Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter 2.0 (MVMC)" on 08-Apr-2014. Let see what's new in MVMC 2.0

Supported guest operating system to convert from VMware ESXi host, vSphere and vCenter to MVMC 2.0
For Windows Clients, it supports the following operating systems.
  • Windows Vista Enterprise (x86 and x64)
  • Windows 7 Professional (x86 and x64)
  • Windows 7 Enterprise (x86 and x64)
  • Windows 7 Ultimate (x86 and x64)
  • Windows 8 Pro (x86 and x64)
  • Windows 8 Enterprise (x86 and x64)
For Windows Servers, it supports the following operating systems.
  • Windows Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter (x86 and x64)
  • Windows Web Server 2008 R2 (x64)
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise and Datacenter (x64)
  • Windows Server 2012 Standard and Datacenter (x64)
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and Datacenter (x64)
MVMC 2.0 supports the following Linux operating systems.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (x86 and x64)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (x86 and x64)
  • Ubuntu 12.04 (x86 and x64)
  • Ubuntu 10.04 (x86 and x64)
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86 and x64)
  • CentOS 6 (x86 and x64)
  • CentOS 5 (x86 and x64)
  • Debian GNU/Linux 7 (x86 and x64)
  • Oracle Linux 6 (x86 and x64)

However, MVMC 2.0 doesn't support to convert all Windows Server 2003 and R2 versions.

MVMC 2.0 supports to convert offline virtual machines.

Support to convert to Microsoft Azure
There is an option for administrator to convert virtual machines from VMware to Microsoft Azure by MVMC 2.0.


Support to convert to VHDX format for Hyper-V hosts
MVMC 2.0 can convert virtual hard disks to VHD or VHDX format which is supported by Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.


Converting virtual hard disks by PowerShell module
As previous version, administrators can use "MVDC.exe" to convert vmdk virtual hard disks to vhd format. Staring from MVMC 2.0, the MVDC was replaced by PowerShell cmdlets. administrators can perform "Import-Module .\MvmcCmdlet.psd1" at the installation path to import MVMC 2.0 cmdlets module.


Supported operating systems for MVMC 2.0
Administrators can install MVMC 2.0 on Windows 8, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
