Generating a report for a specific Windows Service in System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2

In April, I needed to configure the System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 to be generated an availability report for "Microsoft Exchange Information Store" and "Microsoft Exchange Transport" services in the production environment. By default, there is no Windows Services to be monitored if there is no Management Pack (MP) to be imported. I needed to add the specific Windows Services in SCOM 2007 R2.

Goals

Generating an availability report for a specific Windows Service, "Microsoft Exchange Transport".

1. On the SCOM server, log in as a user which is a member of "Operations Manager Administrators".
2. Launch "Operations Console" of "System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2".
3. Select "Authoring" tab.
4. Expand "Authoring > Management Pack Templates > Windows Service".

5. Right-click "Windows Service", select "Add Monitoring Wizard".

6. On "Monitoring type" window, select "Windows Service".

7. Click "Next".

8. Under "Name", type a name for the service.

9. Next to "Select destination management pack", select a Custom Management Pack.

Remark: It's not suggest to save the custom settings in "Default Management Pack".

10. Click "Next".

11. On "Service Details" window, next to "Service name".

12. Select "MSExchange Transport".

13. Next to "Targeted group", select "All Windows Computers".

Remark: You can create the custom group for "Targeted group".

14. Un-check "Monitor only automatic service".

Remark: If "Monitor only automatic service" is checked, only the "Startup Type" of services are equal to "Automatic" to be monitored.

15. Click "Next" twice.

16. Click "Create".

The service has been created.

17. Select "Monitors".

The monitors of "Microsoft Exchange Transport" also has been created.

18. Select "Reporting" tab.

19. Select "Microsoft Generic Report Library".

20. Double-click "Availability".

21. Click "Add Object".

22. Next to "Object Name", type "Microsoft Exchange Transport".

23. Click "Search".

The service, "Microsoft Exchange Transport", can be found.

24. Add the items, click "OK".
25. Click "Run" to generate the report.

As a result, I can generate the report for the "Microsoft Exchange Transport" service.
